Artplay® was born out a need for me to express creative energy, after the words for poetry stopped coming to me. I hadn’t ever practiced the skills of portraits or landscapes, so I was convinced I wasn’t an artist. Then I was encouraged by my trusted counselor to not think of it as work, but rather to allow myself to “play with color on a canvas.” A switched flipped and I let go of perfectionism, expectations, and self-criticism. The result is my bold, textured, abstract artplay.
This style was originated by the artist and was the style of the first painting he ever did. He named it Drop and Drag because he first drops the paint around the canvas and then uses a tool to drag through the paint. Each movement he makes picks up some paint and also leaves some behind, providing the mix of colors at each drop.
The artist most commonly gets feedback that viewers see birds, fish, and flowers. What do you see?

In October of 2018, the artist had his first ever solo art show, “Full Body Of Play.”
He wanted to explore the connection between his tactile nature and the art he creates. Therefore, every single piece was created by appling the acrylic to each canvas using only his body to paint. No brushes, no putty knives. Only his body to apply and manipulate the paint on the canvas.
Some of the art pieces contain photographic art by Jim Cauthen. The artist received permission to use the photos and transfer them to the canvas before painting on top of the images. This was another way to incorporate the meaning behind the title of the show.

The artist has a passion for bending the lines because of his very strict upbringing. Rather than seeing things in polar extremes, he likes to play with the tension of pushing and pulling different size lines in multiple directions. Creating a new, beautiful structure of his own.

The artist has a deep fascination with three dimensional texture. He plays with many painting tools such as putty knives, his hands, and ink rollers. However, for media he uses only acrylic to create the raised imagery.

Impactful color and color contrast are central to the artist’s point of view. He shows this through selectively placing color against negative space within the paintings, rather than relying on wall space to provide such an effect. Even bold colors are sharply laid over or around each other to create striking images.

This collection, Fluid Art, is from the artist’s show in which every piece was created using a fluid acrylic medium. The paintings contain paint mixed with pouring medium and/or string gel medium. This took the artist into new methods he had never tried and created fascinating blends and swirls of bold colors.
